Let's see...2003, what a big year. The basketball team with an awesome season that Rachel and I spent a fortune feeding. Playing Rosie in Bye Bye Birdie. Living with the best Czech foreign exchange student I know, Dominika. Mom getting sick and being sick for a long time. Prom. Scholarships and award ceremonies. My first A- (gotta love Psychology), but being able to keep my 4.0 because it's that final grade that really matters. Grandma dying and one of the most unhappy weekends of my life that included graduation, and that scary valedictorian speech. Destin Beach, Fla. and henna tattoos, strawberry daquiris, and the worst sunburns of my and Erin's lives. Breaking up. Red, White, and Boom with Kurtis. Seeing almost every movie that came out this summer. Finally starting to party with my friends from the pool (yes, Kurt, those ARE cornfields). Learning to heal with Monica. Freaking out about what I'd gotten myself into with marching band. Moving in to Miami, marching marching marching, meeting lots of new people. Audra's wedding. My car being smashed. My first halftime performance! Hooking Cassie and Megan on ABC soap operas. Halloween. Candlewood parties, rushing, and making lots of friends. My wonderful Chemistry grades. Watching my sister play Annie and bringing Christina to the wonderful town of Loudonville. Great trips to New York City and Alabama. And an insomniac Christmas break with Kurtis and Monica, complete with about a zillion games of Clue, back road signs, and MarioKart...What a year.
Not being at Miami hasn't been this much fun since last summer. Monica and Kurtis and I have practically been living together. I'm not sure how many games of Clue we've played, but it's definitely been fun. Also, you have to leave the room you are in on every turn. This is an important rule to cover BEFORE beginning the game.
I had a really great Christmas. Christmas Eve was a little hard without Grandma, and it was kinda disappointing that I had to leave early to go play Baritone for the Lutheran Church service. It went pretty well, though. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be....I had a good Christmas day too. I got the Gap vest I wanted, in red, and I really like it. Even though Monica told me "well, it would be good if you wore it hunting, then you wouldn't get shot." Nice. I will still wear it though.
It is really hard to get off of what Kurtis and I call "college time." We are still staying up until like 3 every morning. That is bad for me, because I don't get up until 11 or so. Now, what is really bad is that my "college time" isn't looking like 11 or 12 for next semester...it's looking like 8 am Chemistry. There is no relation between my schedule now and the one I'm facing in a week and a half. Yuck.
One last thing...I had so much fun after the basketball game. On the drive home from Mt. Vernon, Kyle, Kurtis, Rob, Monica and I had the best time, except for Monica losing the phone that she usually has glued to her ear. We also found out that all the roads in Knox County have cool names (haha), and that Kyle can't help hitting every single pothole as he drives down the road. That was the best showing of Robocop I've ever seen!
And tonight is New Year's...I'll be celebrating with the family, Monie and Kurt, and some rousing rounds of Bunco. I can't wait for 2004!

Aaahhh!!! It is stressful to be home...

Where to begin? On what I thought was going to become a really disappointing band trip, I had one of the best times ever. After taking (and hopefully passing!) my Chemistry lab final, I headed for the CPA and we bussed it down to Cincinnati and flew to Alabama. I had the best flight ever, sitting between Justin and Christina. FYI, Justin is secretly in love with Jason Fox, a.k.a. Beardo. We don't think Jason's really feeling the same way about Justin, but I figure, that's okay.

After we got to Mobile, Christina, Phil, Lindsey, Scott, Steve, Adam and I went to see LOTR at Midnight. It was pretty good. Then, at 3:30 am, we had to stand out in the freezing cold and wait for our taxi to come. We waited for about 35 minutes, huddling together (yay for Baritone lovin' inspiring the other low brass!) Then we went back to the room, getting there at about the same time as the second charter flight, which hadn't left Ohio until 1 a.m. Yuck.

On Wednesday we played a concert for the Mayor's Luncheon and then Christina Justin and I went to this nice little restaurant and Beardo followed us. An interesting conversation ensued, as I'm sure you can imagine. Just a note, all three of them are Westerners. So you know what I mean. Then we had all came back to the HUGE room Christina, Anne, Molly and I shared and took naps. All of you who got stuck with little hole in the wall rooms, I'm sorry, but our room was great. A gigantic living room, a big bedroom, and a good-sized bathroom...we used it well, though. Justin came in and said, "how did you manage to make this big of a mess in two days?" Well, what can we say? It's just the way we are.

After our naps we considered skipping the Mardi Gras parade but if we had we would have missed the BEST parade ever. In the Mardi Gras fashion, people were throwing beads so we all got a pretty good collection, even though not everyone was EARNING their beads, and some of us weren't very good at sharing and called people mean names for trying to get the cool ones. The parade was just fun to march in because you could just have fun instead of being serious and worried about being on tv. That was good for my line because the right side has some serious guiding issues. It's like they can't figure out how to stand next to someone in a straight line.

After the parade, Christina and I went out with Kim and Rachel and had pizza, and then we went to a place called Charlie's and this dance club...and it was lots of fun. I think Christina and I decided it was one of our most fun nights of college so far. On Thursday we had rehearsal and I had to take Nathan's spot in pre-game. Why, you ask? Because the airline lost his luggage. Christina and I have this theory, though, that really he just didn't bring it so he wouldn't have to march. Clever. He was thinking ahead. We went out for oysters for lunch and then went to the game and had the best time ever. If you read this, Kira, I got another picture of Ben Roethisberger! He directed the band in the fight song after the game.

I was really tired that night so I went back to the room, played cards with Steve and then watched Dogma until 2 am when Christina came home and let me tell you, she must have had a really great time Thursday night because Friday morning she was having the worst time ever. It didn't help that I am most definitely not a morning person and since we all had to be up at 4, we didn't get much sleep. We were fighting until we got on the plane, when we all finally got some sleep and were feeling...better.

We returned from the 50's and 60's of Alabama to the ice and snow of Ohio to spend a whopping 40 minutes in Oxford and head to Dayton airport for Christina's flight. She got there with 20 minutes to spare. Luckily she did get there though because the roads were bad and we did a little 180 on the airport exit ramp, which made me oh-so-eager to drive the rest of the trip. As luck would have it, Monica and I ended up stuck in the same traffic in downtown Columbus and we stopped for dinner. After that the roads got even worse and so, after 7 hours of driving and 16 hours total of travelling, I was finally home, to find my sister eating lettuce as a snack. Isn't that weird? I think she is a rabbit. She also likes to eat sprouts. That's my Alabama story, I hope you all liked it.

It was a long day here in Oxford. I spent the day cleaning, packing, studying, and taking a chemistry exam for which the national average is a 60 percent. Let's hope that I am above average. Way above average. Had an interesting talk with Mike tonight: "What are the quantum numbers for this?" "I don't know. What is it?" "I don't know, I'm asking you!" "I don't know, I'm failing!" It was definitely funny. It might be funnier if you read it out loud, I don't know. Then I went to Wal-Mart with Christina and we didn't spend any money. How often does that happen at Wal-Mart? It was amazing. We also had an interesting conversation. Tonight has just been one revelation after another, and if you would like to hear about it then maybe I will share but I just don't have the time to right now because I am going to go study for my last final and do some laundry for the trip to Mobile coming up, not to mention heading back to Loudonville. One last thing...thanks to everone for the away messages today, I've never had so many. :)
Yay! Lots more snow today! And according to Cassie, "Wow. Miami looks a lot prettier with snow on it."

Lots of fun tonight with Anne and Christina! I can't wait to live with you guys and let you see that I, too, am messy. Tonight started out with an exciting and death-defying drive to Candlewood. Luckily, Anne is an amazingly safe driver and we only spun out once in the snow, which has finally decided to come to Oxford--just in time for us to leave for Alabama and break. Then I found out how much fun it is to eat dinner with Tim and Christina, because they have butter knife sword fights and throw things at each other. It's also pretty embarrassing...but what can you do. I also had fun watching movies at 195. Who knew "talking" reindeer were so funny?
Now it's time for me to go and finish getting ready for my Chemistry final. BMZ 115 is over and done with, thank goodness...and in three days, this semester will be over!

This is the guest post of the month. It's coming from yours truly, the future of the trombone section, and Big K, Steve Pauwels. Loren has been complaining all day about what to write on her blog, so to cover for her, i decided to fill in. currently loren is "studying" which is to say that she and her roommate and her roommate's friend, megan, are all sitting around talking, laughing, and making fun of profs and random other people. i don't know if any of you have seen the new strong bad this week, but you should if you haven't, and if you have, go see it again, because it's fawesome. loren's roommate just stated "we should base our lives around shrek", good plan. ok, so i really don't have anything to write about, so i'll wrap this up. if your name is nick or joe, i'll see you tonight at the gog, and if not, then...i'll...see...you...BALEETED! oh...sorry...random homestar reference. night y'all, and i'll see everyone later!

Steve.

Well, my day has definitely improved since this morning. I went to BMZ (Botany/Microbio/Zoology for you non-Miami folk) and found out that on my lab final I got an...A! I was so excited. I finished my English essay last night, and it's not so bad, and although I do have finals this weekend, I got some studying done tonight. Things are looking up. And hey--if this Zoology thing doesn't pan out, that's okay, because Cassie and I are going to move to California and start a new Match Game. (If you haven't seen it, you should turn on Game Show Network at 9:30 or 10:30 every weeknight. It is classic game show fun.) We're going to make lots of money and be famous, so if you would like to be a part of it, let us know now, not when we are famous. Well, back to the books. Ugh.
Not fun = having a three day notice of my exam dates/times. I didn't even know if my Chemistry exam was going to be this weekend until today! On the bright side, I don't think I would have done so great on it anyway, so I'll just deal with it. Anyone interested in helping me cram, though, let me know. I have until noon on Saturday. Also on the bright side, I will be responsibility-free over break, which is nice. The only bad part will be if my parents see my grades...

You know what I love? Getting away messages. And you know who is the best at leaving them? Scotty. Love ya kiddo.
Well, what a weekend. MU hockey is awesome and I would have to say that last night's game was no exception. First this OSU guy slammed one of our guys up against the glass and it shattered, which was pretty cool to see, although I'm sure it hurt. Then they were all fighting at the end, and hockey isn't hockey without a good fight. ha ha. Christina, Steve, Nick, Kenny, and everyone else, last night was a lot of fun! I am so glad to have made such great friends. Even though Steve beat me at fooseball (Those of you at home, can you believe I am admitting to a loss? It is shocking, I know...) My broomball team, having had another forfeited win today, will play on Tuesday night. That's exciting. Today was also the band spaghetti dinner (lunch) and for those of you who didn't come or left early, you definitely missed a good freshman skit. Emily, you know that Christina and I love you. :) Let's see...Kurtis--you are the best friend a girl could ask for! What would I do without you? Look for us to be playing our baritone and Alto Sax on Christmas Eve. In the words of my dad, "it will be fun." Ha ha. Well, off to study for those ever-approaching finals...wish me luck.
Memorable quote of the day:

Melanie: “It’s funny how they do.”

"Hey, Britney Spears doesn't have a boyfriend...so I shouldn't feel bad."--Monica
Yes, it's true...the band is going to Mobile, Alabama to accompany the football team at the GMAC bowl. And we're flying. During finals week. So you know what that means...I need to go study to get ready for my early finals.
I'm sure everyone wants to hear about the fun time I had at the MAC Championship game last night. First we had a three-and-a-half hour bus ride to BG, during which I had to listen to the flags complain about how much they didn't like being on the Tuba bus. Personally I think it's great that there is a bus with so much...personality. Besides, it's the only bus I know with rules. Even if they aren't the most orthodox kind. So we get there and the BG fans are just ridiculously rude. They were giving the band bus the finger when we got there, and then when we got into the stadium they were really bad. They threw stuff at us. That is just so stupid. And what kind of school puts up a sign that says "UnFALCONbelieveable!"? They did have some clever signs, I mean, some BG pride is okay--"Mommy and Daddy can't by championships" and "J. Crew doesn't sell championships" but I think that cheering "F*** Miami" is just uncalled for. I'm pretty sure that doesn't happen at MU, at least not to the other team's band. That's just crass. But, we did win, and I'm proud of the Redhawks. And of course, the band did a great job, even though it was a little bit freezing. I think that the thing that made my night, though, was when I was telling my parents what the BG people were yelling at us and then we had a very loud, very spirited, "Hey Bowling Green! The tuba bus says--" and then everyone says...well...you know what they say, they say exactly what I was telling my parents was so rude. So funny.

So, I'm still awake and I have decided that the 4 hours of studying I put in tonight, plus the 3 I will get in tomorrow, plus all the work I've done before this week...equals seven hours of studying for the Chemistry test tomorrow. Hmm. Not so good. But the entire last chapter is over the Ideal Gas Law, which I know pretty well (thank you Mr. Weber) so I'm feeling not so suicidal over this one. Wish me luck. I also have this creative writing paper due in two weeks, which isn't so bad except for I HAVE NO PLOT. I don't even think I have a main character yet. I just keep sitting, waiting for inspiration to come and it doesn't. Or it does and I get about a paragraph into what I'm writing and then it's gone. I'll come up with something, right? So, with all this in mind, I'm definitely looking forward to break. Visiting Monica at the "Devil Store" and telling her I heard a weird noise, driving my car and not having to park it a mile away, having a house and a dog, and then there's Christmas, which is definitely worth being home for. I guess I'm not allowed to make a gingerbread house this year, but anyone who's interested in taking one after I've built it is more than welcome to have it, because I have a hard time getting rid of them after the holiday season has ended, and my Mom might just smash anything I make if it's in my house after Dec. 25.
Alright...that's enough for me...I think I might just go bring up my grade one or two points and study molecular geometry...I can't wait.
Oh, let's see...nothing like avoiding studying for a chemistry exam by writing a blog, right? Well, I just got back from Thanksgiving Break on Sunday night and it was a lot of fun. First, there was a 14 hour bus ride to New York City, all the way at the front of the bus. Christina and I finally got the chance to ride the tuba bus and show them what rule 7 is all about on Wednesday night. I think (like she said) we definitely had more fun on that one 15 minute ride than we did in all 30 hours or more we spent on our own bus. Then there was the parade, which was really cool. I was thinking, how many people do you think have just gotten to stand in the middle of the road at Times Square? Not many, other than the millions of people who have participated in the Macy's Parade but if you look at it in a world view then not so many. And I happen to be one of the not so many, which I think is fun. You can also see me in the parade, right before we perform, when we are marching in--right before we put our horns up. It is very cool. I am impressed with us. We all even managed to hold up our horns while Santa stood there and waved through the whole credits, which is amazing. Let's see...I had a fun ride in a taxi on Thursday night. I had a really hard time understanding the driver's accent and I feel bad about that. I guess it made it that much more interesting for me and Chad, or maybe just me because I did all the talking. We also had some cheesecake that night (it's so much better in New York City) and I bought a (fake) Prada purse for 5 bucks less than the guy on the street originally wanted to sell it for, so I was impressed with myself. On Friday we got rained out of going up the Empire State Building so Justin, Chad, Tyler and I spent the day wandering around the city shopping. I bought some Tulips. I couldn't help myself, even though I knew they would get crushed and/or water-deprived on the trip...which they didn't really, but then I succeeded in leaving them in Loudonville. Oh well. At least they can enjoy them there. So, that's my New York story. It was a great time.
