Another Look

After many hours laboring over the html of this page, my wonderful friend Steve and I got it to look this way. I like it. Let me know what you think, because if I don't hear from anyone, I'll probably change it back after it stops being fun because it's new.

Boyfriends, Babies, and Bands by E-Mail

Interestingly, my e-mail inbox has become the destination for virtually all sorts of spam. Sure, the nasty stuff is already filtered out, but some stuff still gets through. There are a few people who just won't stop sending stuff:
Adoption Services: they want me to adopt some poor child from another country, find a surrogate mother, or locate a donor for insemination. I'm not quite sure what got me on their mailing list. I am sure, though, that I'm not looking to adopt, and I'm certainly not going to adopt a child online.
[Insert Adjective] Singles: "Christian," "Online," "In Your Area"...I have received about three singles ads in the mail every day for the past week. Obviously, if I were interested in finding someone single online, I would have already done so. I'm also going to have to say that although it has worked for some, online dating is not for me. I guess I could build a family in a few clicks of a mouse (click! A husband. click! a Taiwanese daughter.), but I'm just not into that.
House of Blues Concerts: Ever since I went to Aerosmith, these guys have sent me an ad for every single concert Blossom has shown. I didn't realize it, but Blossom seems to be a pretty busy place: Kid Rock, Boston, Ozzfest...If it's rock and happening at Blossom, I can tell you about it. This may be the only frequent-spammer that I am unafraid to trust, but it's a little frustrating to get so many e-mails.

Just a Basic Update

I know that I haven't been very good about posting the things I've been up to lately. There is one good reason for that: there just haven't been many at all. My last day off was July 4th, and I just did a post on work, so here are a few things I thought were worthy of sharing with the masses of people who read my blog:

First of all, I am getting a crazy tan this summer. Every year I say, "Loren, this year you're going to stay as un-tan as possible." And then every year, it starts out the same way: I buy the spf 30 instead of 45. I say, "one day of borrowing the spf 8 and then I'll start wearing my 30. I just need that base color." I start comparing my tan to everyone else's, and I start trying to even out my tan lines. Then it's all over. I'm done. I just keep thinking, "I can be a little darker." My hair has also bleached out, and it's really easy to see where the dye I used in the spring has grown out because it's bleaching a lot faster. I was shocked to see a definite blonde looking back at me in the mirror tonight. I liked it, which is weird considering that in three months I'll want to be a brunette again.

Jimmy's girlfriend just got back from Korea and brought us all cool presents. I got this pretty little traditional Korean doll and I like it a lot. Very fun.

I'm just about to finish The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. Hopefully I'll get around to writing a post dedicated to this unfortunate thriller-meets-controversial-material novel sometime in the next few days.

I have managed to see nine movies already this summer. I would like to go for a higher number, but I'm afraid that my finances won't allow it. Yes, I realize that I work all the time, but there's this little thing I got in the mail today called a tuition bill that's got me all worried. I realize that I was the recipient of a parental scholarship, but I'm still going to have to save myself some money for the next 7 or 8 months.

I'm writing this as a word document on my new laptop. I'm glad I don't have any way to connect it to the internet except to steal the cable from my desktop computer, because otherwise I think I'd be stuck to it all the time. It goes everywhere. I'm excited to take it back to school. Advice: when going to college, take a laptop. A desktop is just not practical. Do I like laptops better than desktops? No. I don’t. But I do like practicality.

Well, that's all. Time to get ready for work. Only three days left until my next day off!

"It's Always Sunny At Mohican!"

I've gone through an awful lot of the summer without talking about my job at the Mohican State Park Campground Swimming Pool. This is a place where, if campers get tired of swimming in the "crick," they can come play in water that isn't very deep (the "deep" end is four-and-a-half feet deep. I typically work there four days a week, eight hours at a time, with one other lifeguard.

Camping is a big industry for Loudonville; if you drive south out of town you will find, packed together on one road, numerous canoe liveries, even more campgrounds, every single franchised restaurant we have except our Taco Bell Express, the entrance to the state park, and one overpriced gas station. And when summer arrives, we don't say, "summer's here, it's really hot" or "you know it's summer when school's out." We say, "summer's here, it took me 20 minutes to get to East of Chicago? or, "Smell those campfires [from the other side of town]? Yep, it's summer."

Now, as my friend Kristen (who also works at the campground) would say, campers do some pretty crazy stuff. Here are a few things I have learned about the summer-folk now that I work for them:
First of all, you don't come camping alone. Oh no. You have to bring lots and lots of people, preferably your extended family: Grandparents are a must; brothers, sisters, and of course your children's boy/girlfriend are also welcome. The aunts and uncles are necessary to bring your kids to the pool while you are busy doing something like building the campfire or running to Dollar General.

Second of all, friendliness to all the other campers is key. You hang out with everyone who camps near your site. You go fishing with them, you play videogames at the arcade with them, and you come to the pool and terrorize the lifeguards with them. Ah...best friends forever. I mean, for a week.

Alright: You have to ask the question, "what is there to do in this town after 9 o'lock?" I have two replies: "um...you can go bowling...?" and "when you figure it out, let me know." What I should probably say is, "you're going to have to drive about half an hour." You also have to ask what happened to the diving boards (they were taken out in the 80's when the new, more shallow pool was put in), because, you know, you and your family love it here at Mohican and have come here to this very campground for about 35 years.

All in all, it's an interesting experience. Definitely different from working at the public pool where all the little kids know our names and we know all the little 13-year-olds' names because we've thrown them each out several times. Ah, summer.

The Trio's Day Off

This morning was not a very nice morning. I woke up to gray skies and went in to the pool to guard swim team practice. Kurt came back and Scott showed up, and it started to sprinkle--no big deal, you're already wet in a pool. But once the old ladies water aerobics decided to call it quits, it started raining harder and we decided to close the pool until 4. We sat around deciding what to do for the afternoon and then headed for the mall.
We went to the shoe store, where Kurtis looked for some Lance Armstrong rubberbands for his wrists. They were sold out. Here we are, celebratingWe went to the Gap and American Eagle, and I have found that I like shopping with Kurtis. Scott, unfortunately, doesn't have the patience for us, so we decided to go feed him some lunch. Chi-Chi's, to be exact. And we decided we'd tell them it was his birthday. Kurtis told the waitress that Scott's parents were out of town so we'd decided to take him out to celebrate. Some highlights of the meal:
Scott: [in front of the waitress] yep, my parents are on out of town
Loren: where did they go?
Scott: uh...Mexico...
Kurtis: so that's why we brought you to Chi-Chi's?
also...
Kurtis: [as he pulls a little flag out of his enchilada...the flag is obviously Mexican, as we're at Chi-Chi's.] What is this thing? A Cuban flag?

Needless to say, we had a good time. On the way home, we sang Queen, Guns 'n Roses, and...Jewel. Good times. I love you guys.

Point for Chad

funniest thing I've heard all summer:
Chad: this steak is too good to be from the IGA.
Loren: yeah, it's from the Marathon
[collective grimace from the group]
Chad: you might be a redneck...if you get your gas and your steak at the same place.
